The
mission of the Regional Institute for Community
Policing (RICP) is to promote public safety as a
philosophy and practice for all members of a
Community. It is through partnerships and community
engagement, organizational change and
transformation, innovative approaches to problem
solving, non-traditional thinking, strong
community-based leadership and quality technical
assistance that the essence of community policing is
redefined and applied in order to enhance the
quality of life in
Illinois.
The RICP attempts to find solutions to community
problems through partnerships, facilitation and
innovative problem solving strategies. Founded in
1997, the RICP is an alliance between the University
of Illinois, the Illinois State Police and the
Illinois Violence Prevention Authority. Upon this
foundation, the RICP has expanded its partners to
include the Illinois Terrorism Task Force, the
American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals as well as other public and private
organizations.
The RICP is part of the University of Illinois and
is affiliated with the Institute of Government and
Public Affairs (IGPA). IGPA works to improve the
quality of government at all levels through research
and public service. Utilizing the resources of its
partners, the RICP examines such issues as:
all-hazard preparedness; domestic violence; animal
abuse; and attempts to reduce such problems by
utilizing current technologies with critical
thinking. By bringing diversity to the public policy
platform, together the RICP and IGPA put theory into
practice. Offering sound research, training and
technical assistance to public decision makers
increases body of knowledge along with the learning
experience.
